Developing Literacy in the Regular Education Classroom and Home Environment

This Wiki page will include a set of resources that may be used by regular education teachers and parents for promoting literacy.

Remember to set the page up with a title and graphic. Include the following resources:

For Parents Literacy in the Home Information Newsletter: Design a Newsletter that may be sent home or distributed to parents. The Newsletter should be designed in MS Word, and must use a Newsletter format. Please see the templates included with MS Word. 

Begin with a heading and graphic. Give the Newsletter a title.

The Newsletter should be in English (although parents may need the information translated). Include the following information:

 Brief overview of the importance of home literacy for the ESL student.

 Tips or strategies for engaging in home literacy.

 Your name, school, and contact information.



For Teachers / Promoting SLA Literacy in the Classroom: The following information may be directly entered on this Wiki page:



  • A brief overview of identifying learning differences -- not language difficulties.




  • Also include one each of the following resources:


    • Two informational web sites that explain the importance of: a) literacy development and b) oral language development in the SLA process.


    • One teaching tool such as a lesson plan, student handouts, language tools, etc.


    • One informational article (title, author, and URL / link)

    • One “suggested children’s literature book” appropriate for a selected age/proficiency level with title, author, and brief summary.
